Alex has written concert works for many high-profile ensembles Royal Northern Sinfonia, London Contemporary Orchestra, EXAUDI vocal ensemble, CHROMA ensemble, Tritium Trio, City Chamber Choir (as Composer-in-Association), Barbican Sinfonia, Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, and soloists including Huw Watkins, Michael Foyle, Quinta, Jonathan Powell and Aino Konkka. Alex was recently featured on Sound and Music’s “Next Wave 2” scheme, for which his piece “Luminalia” was premiered by Royal Northern Sinfonia & soloist Quinta at Sage Gateshead in January 2018, and was released on NMC Recordings. Alex has a particular interest in writing for the theatre, having worked as composer on a number of recent projects including the Frank Wedekind play Lulu (dir. Christian Burgess) in November 2015 in Silk Street Theatre, and “Go, Make You Ready” (dir. Patsy Rotenburg OBE & Sue Lefton) which toured to China and was featured on the BBC iPlayer as part of the Shakespeare 400 event in March 2016. He has also scored a few short films, including Donald (dir. Andrew Montague) and Unravel (dir. William Eley).
Alex is also an experienced arranger, orchestrator and songwriter, having completed a number of arrangements for London Musical Theatre Orchestrator (LMTO) and the GSMD Pops Orchestra. Alex graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with first-class honours in composition with Paul Whitmarsh, winning both the Edmund Rubbra prize for best composition and the Rose Lawrence award for highest academic achievement. He recently finished a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music with Gary Carpenter and Edmund Finnis, and has taken part in lessons and masterclasses with Julian Anderson, Oliver Knussen & Andrew Norman.
